First strobist set outdoor test

Sun Oct 18, 2009, 4:34 AM
Yesterday i had another shooting with the lovely kathy where i had a chance to test my new strobist set outdoor at around 7°C

I took 1x Canon 580EXII and 2x Canon 540EZ (i only used one flash a time), 2 light walimex studio tripods, 1x 90cm white walimex studio umbrella, a cheap asian remote flash trigger, the Canon 5D and the 70-200 L 2.8 with me.

I ran into several problems (boy thats a learning curve :D):

- the asian remote flash triggers ate the whole batteries again. Either i really have to make sure that the off-switch is set to "off" or i have to remove the batteries after each photoshooting. After we got new batteries the triggers worked fine the whole time. But i will get 3-4 Pocketwizards (whenever i will have the money), because the Pocketwizard are more easy to switch off and are more easy to controlled. Now i have to remove the Remote sender from the camera each time i want to shoot without firing the flash.

- i have to get gels. Some pictures look really alienish - mixture of different light sources

- I have a sharpness issue with the 70-200 L lens. All pictures (on different speed settings) are not that sharp as i expected. Either autofocus went terrible wrong or i have a back-/frontfocus issue on a certain distance. Have to run some tests

Anyhow it was a great photoshooting, with alot of fun and technical issues, but i am looking forward to get used to my strobist set. In a few months i will have all my strobist gear together (Besides new equipment i have to change the tripods and umbrellas for more compact ones and have to get a bag for all the stuff).

Besides my technical blah: I really enjoyed having Kathy for the shoot, because she loves being photographed and doesn't hesitate to jump into action. It was really cold yesterday and on some settings she only was dressed with an airy dress and walked barefooted.

I will post pictures of the shoot somewhen around the next days
